Active Gardens

In 2020/21 Essex Cultural Diversity Project worked with a range of diverse communities in Colchester and Tendring to support an outdoor Active Gardens project that encouraged people to become more active through gardening. The project supported around 20-25 people with their mental health and wellbeing, especially the vulnerable elderly and over 50 who have been self-isolating or shielding at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Active Gardens project encouraged people from diverse communities through daily activities that promote many benefits, including physical activity, responsibility and independence, self-confidence, teamwork and communication, healthy lifestyles, and environmental awareness.

The Active Gardens project was delivered through online platforms including video meetings, discussions and sharing of ideas and good practice around gardening. As part of the project, artist Marley created a series of ten fun videos to introduce people to the joy and basics of ‘growing your own’. Watch the videos below and hear an interview with the artist for ECDP Radio.

About the Artist

Marley is without definition. Finding expression through creation without limits. Often found immersed in the natural world, behind the lens of the camera, shooting stillness, capturing movement, designing soundscapes, editing at a Mac screen or recipe making & co-creating with fellow artist & Love, Lora. Together, their journey as Wyrd Flora is a little more easily defined as Herbal Art, Plant Medicine, Explorative Foraging & Wild Foods.
