October is Black History Month, and once again we’re supporting events and activities taking place across the county. Here’s an overview of what’s on, with links to friends and partners websites for more info.

Black History Month Colchester: Community Hub

Black History Month Colchester 2022 theme this year is Health and Well-Being focusing on celebration, acknowledgement and the achievements of black people in the UK, and addressing issues around safeguarding Mental Health in our diverse communities. Throughout October BHM Colchester will be based at the One Colcheter Community Hub, hosting exhibitions, displays, events and performances. Pop in, make connections, and find out what’s happening throughout the town this October.

Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories, EVEWRIGHT

Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories is an art and sound installation by Artist EVEWRIGHT. It is the first site-specific art and sound installation to be held at the Port of Tilbury in Essex and the UK dedicated to people of the Windrush Generation. It is an immersive visual art experience, installed on 432 panes of glass collaged with photographs, documents, original boat passenger tickets and memorabilia. The artwork is installed in an original passenger walkway 55 metres long. As you walk through, you can listen to audio stories about the lives of some of the elders whose images are featured in the installation.

Windrush Exhibition at Essex Libraries

Essex Cultural Diversity Project’s pop-up Windrush exhibition continues to tour Essex Libraries and is currently in Waltham Abbey for September, then throughout October the exhibition will be going out with the outreach mobile library for Black History Month.

Born from a desire to create a different way to shape dance; a new interactive performance based on the random track selection of an iPod Shuffle and emulating the relationship between the club dance floor and the DJ.
