Supporting emerging artists
Essex Cultural Diversity Project recently linked Essex Born filmmaker Rehmat Rayatt with the New Creatives programme, funded by Arts Council England and BBC Arts. As part of her New Creatives commission, she created a 5-minute film entitled Terra Firma, which explored her cultural background and identity, aired on BBC 4 in September 2019, as part of their Rhyme and Reason: BBC Introducing Arts programme showcasing a selection of short films by young artists. This was an excellent opportunity for us to support an Essex artist from a diverse background, from proposal to the final screening stages.

Poet Lemn Sissay presents a selection of short, vibrant films from a new generation of artists who are inspired by poetry and the spoken word. This is an opportunity to feel the rhyme and reason of today’s Britain as artists reflect what is important to them from gender identity to first dates; the labyrinth of the internet to early morning wake up calls. As Sissay notes, “When you write a poem, part of the magic is that you never know where it’s going to take you”. Here then is a chance to meet emerging artists who aren’t afraid to say what’s on their minds
