Nani Vazana is one of the only artists in the world that write and compose new songs in the endangered Ladino language. In her new album Ke Haber (What’s New) she captures the spirit of the ancient, matriarchal language and culture, and propels it into the 21st century with socially pertinent lyrics, celebrating migration, gender and female empowerment.

The soundscape bridges traditional and modern life, evoking sounds and smells of the marketplace and fusing them with raw, flamenco like vocals, soft choral trombone, piano, mariachi guitar and percussion, and piano.

This event has been jointly programmed by Colchester Arts Centre and Essex Cultural Diversity Project, as part of our Global Village Presents series, and is supported by Colchester City Council’s Cultural and Creative Events Fund.

Global Village events take place across the East of England, and celebrate music, song, performance and dance by artists from around the world, bringing diverse communities together within a vibrant festival setting. Global Village Presents is a series of one-off events with key partners in venues across the region, to test audience’s appetites for world music and performance and create a platform for diverse talent.
