Echoes of the Sea

Echoes of the Sea was a collaborative process between international artists and crafts practitioners. Together they worked as a team to produce fifteen figurative sculptures for a creative installation placed at Sevkable Port on the Gulf of Finland.

The project was part of the British Council Creative Commissions programme that brings together art, science and digital technology, and offers innovative, interdisciplinary and collaborative responses to climate change. It was awarded to Essex Cultural Diversity Project supporting collaborative partnerships with artists and professionals internationally, to create an exhibition and seminar, which engaged audiences with issues related to climate change and coastal erosion.

“The arts and cultural sector can play a key role in addressing issues effecting climate change and global warming. Echoes of the Sea will bring awareness concerning rapid coastal erosion and the loss of land.” Indi Sandhu, Creative Director & CEO, Essex Cultural Diversity Project

“Climate change recognises no borders with differences and the diversity of world cultures, with indigenous communities tackling the dynamic shifts in their societies. It’s not superstition, but a terrifying reality in bringing consciousness from the physical transformations in our landscapes to adjust our ways to live in the only world we inhabit. Working together in unity whilst putting differences aside will strengthen the action of doing to accomplish what is needed to succeed.” Nabil Ali, artist
