Saffron Walden Town Centre, and indeed the wider Uttlesford area, is full of opportunity for the creative and heritage sectors. A wealth of history, strong cultural institutions and attractive rural and natural environment all contribute to making Saffron Walden unique in the context of Essex. However, it can also be challenging developing a career in the creative/cultural sectors locally. A lack of affordable creative space/studios, limited funding opportunities and high house prices meaning it is likely that emerging creatives will look outside of the District to develop their careers – these are all factors that potentially undermine the medium and longer-term vitality and diversity of the creative sectors.
Essex Cultural Diversity Project (ECDP) has a strong track record of supporting creatives across Essex to develop their projects, access funding, form partnerships and network effectively. Ensuring that there are opportunities for all, and that diversity is embedded throughout the creative and heritage sectors and scenes is important. Uttlesford District Council (UDC) are partnering Cultural Engine CIC and local creatives and in Saffron Walden to develop concepts for how a dedicated ‘creative space’ could emerge in the town (or wider area). ECDP is keen to support this work through a Salon event.
This event is funded by Uttlesford District Council the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
